2010 ARTIST OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNERS


IACA awards recognize creativity, craftsmanship and appeal. The Artist of the Year is chosen from the first place winners of the following categories.

 

ARTIST OF THE YEAR

Mary Small, Jemez Pueblo

NEW ARTIST MEMBER

Barbara “Tahn-Moo-Whe” Gonzales (San Ildefonso Pueblo) won the inaugural award

for her large, highly polished and finely etched seed bowl. 

 

POTTERY

1st – Mary Small (Jemez), “Ancestral Migration,” Large vase with fluted rim
with sculpted pueblo village on the shoulder

2nd – Pahponee (Kansas Kickapoo/Citizen Band Potawatomi), Smooth pottery vase primitive, buffalo dung fired

3rd – Caroline Carpio (Isleta Pueblo), “Rain Song,” Hand built pot with cloud and rain design.


EASEL ART

1st – Frank Fowler (Navajo), “Navajo Rider,” acrylic painting, (18” x 24”)

2nd – Frank Fowler (Navajo), “Beauty All Around Me,” acrylic painting (16” x 20”)

3rd – Lisa Chavez Thomas (Isleta Pueblo), “Women Becoming,” pyro-engraved, mixed media painting.

 

JEWELRY - LAPIDARY

1st – Jimmy "Ca Win" Calabaza (Santo Domingo), Double strand turquoise necklace

2nd* – Lester Abeyta (Santo Domingo), 5-Strand white clamshell heishi necklace with traditional wraps

2nd* – Bennard Dallasvuyaoma (Aikmel Au-Authm/Hopi), “Loma Ya Sah,” Sterling silver inlay bracelet.

1st – Fidel Bahe (Navajo), Second Phase silver Concho belt

2nd – L. Bruce Hodgins (Navajo), “Old Meets New” Lariat necklace with a double-sided pendant set
with dinosaur bone and sugilite

 

SCULPTURE - SMALL SCALE

1st – Caroline Carpio (Isleta Pueblo), “Desert Rain” Sculpture set with male, female rain spirits

2nd – Pahponee (Kansas Kickapoo/Citizen Band Potawatomi), “Wawatso,” Bronze vase with animal motif, painted with a white patina

3rd – Eddie Morrison (Cherokee), untitled wood sculpture, cedar, robed figure

 

JUDGES CHOICE

1st – Ron Mitchell (Cherokee), “Broken Circle” Large metal sculpture, hand-cut steel
with acrylic painting, flame color accents
