Nativecommunity:“SCCsitsontheSaltRiverPima-MaricopaIndianCommunityand, becauseofthat, weliketosupporteventsand
ideasthatreflectthistoourcampus,aswelasbackouttoourhostnationsandthesuroundingcommunity.”Manymembersofthe
Nativecommunityarestudentsatthecolege.
EveryNovemberthecolegecelebratesNativeAmericanHeritageMonthandplansavarietyofeventsthatmayincludespeakers,
musicians,artists,andstudentactivities.Thisyear,IACA-EFisworkingwithSCCtoplana6-wekexhibitandspeakerseries.The
exhibit isentitled“NativeAmericanHeritageExhibition:TheBusinesofContemporaryIndigenousArt”whereIACAmemberartists
wiltalkabouttheirlivesandart.Thetalkswilbeopentoalstudents,fromSCCandothercoleges,andtothepublic.Exactdates
andtimeswilbepostedontheSCCwebsite.
SCCPresident, Dr. JanGehler, isastrongsupporterofaleventsenhancingtheeducationanddevelopment ofNativestudents, aphiloso-
physhebroughttoSCCfromheryearsasDeanoftheUniversityofAlaskaAnchorageCommunityandTechnicalColege.IACA-EF
andSCClookforwardtoaninformativeandlong-termcolaboration.
