C.    To be eligible, an artist must be either (1) a vendor in the 2010 IACA Wholesale Market, (2) a vendor in the 2010 IACA Retail Market or (3) represented by a Wholesale or Retail Member participating in one of the 2010 IACA Spring Markets.

D.    AOY winners from 2004 and earlier are eligible to enter. Artists who have been named Artist of the Year in any of the most recent five (5) IACA competitions are not eligible to enter.

E.    Although IACA will take all reasonable precautions to safeguard the works of art while they are in IACA’s possession for competition selection and/or promotional purposes, artists entering their work release IACA, its employees, and its representatives from any liability for loss or damage to the property entered into competition due to theft, fire, accident, or other peril.

II.      Procedures for Entering Artist of the Year Competition

A.    Eligible IACA artists must faithfully and fully complete both an Artist Entry and an Artist Profile form to be submitted at the time the piece is entered.

B.    Artists may submit no more than two (2) items of their work. An artist may submit two entries in one category, or may choose to enter one item in one category and the second item in a different category.

C.    The work(s) entered must be described fully in the appropriate place on the AOY Entry Form. All work entered for competition must meet the requirements of IACA Market Rules and Regulations.

D.    The IACA Membership Secretary (or designee) will verify the eligibility of each artist who submits a work for entry into competition.

E.    Each entry must be an original work that has been created since the previous AOY Competition.

F.    Each artist will designate the category in which the artist wishes his/her work entered. These categories include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:

Baskets
Easel Art
Jewelry-Lapidary
Jewelry-Metalsmithing
Katsinas
Pottery
Sculpture-Large Scale/Floor Size
Sculpture-Small Scale/Table Size
Traditional Crafts
Weaving

If there are fewer than three entries in any category, those entries will be placed into the Judges Choice category.

G.    Entries must be submitted by the artist or the artist’s representative to the Competition Committee no later than 8:30 A.M. on the first day of the Spring Wholesale Market (April 22, 2010).

H.    A claim ticket will be issued for each entry and given to its artist or representative. This must be proffered when reclaiming the entry at the completion of the judging.

III.     Judging the Artist of the Year Competition

A.    Judges will be comprised of the IACA Executive Committee (five members) and the most recent five (5) winners of the AOY Competition, for a total of ten (10) judges. If the above-mentioned are not all present at the Market, earlier AOY winners who are exhibitors, but not entering the competition, will be asked to judge.

B.    Judges will use AOY ballots with the criteria for evaluating the artist entries. Judges will rate their first and second choices for the best item in each category using these predetermined criteria. The possibility exists that there may be entries in any given category deemed by the judges to be not worthy of a ribbon according to these criteria. In such a case, judging may result in not all ribbons being awarded.

C.    The completed AOY ballots will be submitted to the Competition Coordinator who will tally the results with the aid of one of the other Competition Committee members.

D.    The first round of judging will determine the Blue Ribbon (1st Place), Red Ribbon (2nd Place), and White Ribbon (3rd Place) winners in each category, if applicable.  The ribbons will be presented to these winners at the 2010 Spring Market Banquet.

E.    The AOY will be determined after the first round of judging is completed. The Coordinator will recall the judges and provide each with a new ballot listing only the Blue Ribbon Winners. The judges will select their 1st and 2nd choices for the new Artist of the Year from this list according to each judge’s overall evaluation of the most deserving entry.

F.    The AOY Competition Coordinator will complete the tally, keeping the results confidential until the 2010 Spring Market Banquet. The ribbon, trophy, and monetary award will be presented at that time to the new Artist of the Year winner.

G.    The new AOY will be asked to have a professional photograph made of his/her 1st Place entry by either the Market photographer or by a photographer of the artist’s choosing as soon as possible after the Competition for future use by IACA in promoting the new Artist of the Year.

H.    Judging of competition entries will begin at 9:00 A.M. on the first day of the Spring Wholesale Market and will be concluded as soon as all the judges have had an opportunity to judge the entries.
